NEED TO KNOW

LOCATION Assisi is just south of Perugia, 110 miles (175 km) north of Rome

WEATHER Temperatures in summer can exceed 84°F (30°C)

DISTANCE It is 130 miles (210 km) from Camaldoli to Assisi. A shorter pilgrimage up Monte Subasio from Spello (7.5 miles/ 12 km) traces the (bare) footsteps of St Francis

Saint Francis of Assisi spent his life walking but in recent years, few people have actually trekked on foot to the spectacular medieval basilica built in his name. However, a new pilgrimage, the Cammino di Assisi, links together several shorter routes connected with the saint’s life, and takes pilgrims through some of the most unspoilt landscapes in Italy. Starting at the Benedictine monastery in Camaldoli, set in forested mountains, it descends into the Tiber valley and passes through several great medieval towns, such as Città di Castello and San Sepolcro. The entry on foot into Assisi must rank among the most thrilling arrivals anywhere.

Practical Information
