Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey

Built beneath the city’s main square during the reign of Justinian in the 6th century AD, this sumptuous Byzantine water cistern contains marble columns and two giant heads of Medusa, one on its side and the other mysteriously, turned upside down. Visitors tread walkways to the mixed sounds of classical music and dripping water.
