El caracol, Belize

The Sky Palace, soaring 140 ft (42 m) above the jungle floor, is just one of thousands of buildings identified in this ancient Mayan city. At its peak in the 7th century, El Caracol was twice the size of Belize City, which is today the capital. Its power was felt for miles around, and it frequently fought against, and defeated, its neighboring city-states, including Tikal in Guatamala (see pp40–41).
