The Sky Palace, soaring 140 ft (42 m) above the jungle floor, is just one of thousands of buildings identified in this ancient Mayan city. At its peak in the 7th century, El Caracol was twice the size of Belize City, which is today the capital. Its power was felt for miles around, and it frequently fought against, and defeated, its neighboring city-states, including Tikal in Guatamala (see pp40–41).
Caracol is a large ancient Maya archaeological site, located in what is now the Cayo District, of Belize. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Xunantunich, and the town of San Ignacio, and 15 km from the Macal River. Wikipedia
