Erg Chebbi, Sahara, Morocco

This is the desert at its most beautiful, but the footprints you leave here won’t last long. An erg is a strange phenomenon – it’s a mountain range of sand that drifts at the will of the wind.

Watch the blazing sun cast weird and wonderful shapes and shadows over the pristine surfaces of the dunes, with their fluid, sensual curves and ripples created by the wind.

Erg Chebbi (Berber: ⴻⵔⴳ ⵛⴱⵉ, Arabic: عرق الشبي) is one of Morocco’s several ergs – large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. There are several other ergs such as Erg Chigaga near M’hamid. Technically all these ergs are within an area of semi-arid Pre-Saharan Steppes and not part of the Sahara desert which lies some distance to the south. Wikipedia
