Fấtes de masques, pays dogon, Mali

On a vast, arid escarpment in central Mali, six men in dramatic hand-painted masks dance vigourously before an enthusiastic crowd. These enactments are said to symbolize Dogon cosmology and to help ward off evil spirits. Two big festivals, Sigui and Dama, take place every 60 and 12 years respectively, but dances
are performed throughout the year.
