The town of Masterton, host to what it claims is the “world’s greatest shearing competition,” greets visitors with a giant pair of golden shears. Each February it draws hundreds of entrants from North and South Island to take part in sheep-shearing and wool-handling contests. Dating back to 1961, competition is fierce and winners become local heroes.
