Heddal stavkirke, heddal, Norway

Built in the mid-13th century with know-how handed down by Viking boat-builders, Heddal’s “wooden cathedral” is the largest stave church in Norway.

Named after the wooden corner-posts on which it is based, its walls and beams are fastened with wooden nails, and the outer walls covered with tar. Inside are some 14th-century wall paintings.
