NEED TO KNOW

The lush mountainous area of Jiuzhai Gou is an earthly paradise known for its 90-plus crystal-clear lakes that sparkle with greens and blues ranging from sapphire to jade, and for its generously gushing waterfalls.

Divided into three main valleys, the preserve is home to diverse vegetation, including bamboo forests that sustain the endangered giant panda population. Fall is a good time to visit, when the leaves burn fiery shades of yellow, gold, and red.

The area is not easy to reach – it is 10 hours by road from Chengdu, the nearest big town.

Highlights

There are several beautiful colored lakes highlighted with spectacular blues and greens. Five Flower Lake features a crisscrossed design offallen trees.

The lakes become even more aesthetically pleasing in the fall when the leaves turn orange, red, and yellow creating beautiful reflections in the water.

The Jiuzhai Gou Waterfall is beautiful and is part of the reason for the park’s name. There are other waterfalls, however, Jiuzhai Gou is probably the pinnacle falls
