Kremlin, kazan, Russia

The word “kremlin” actually means citadel, and Kazan’s is a splendid example. Enclosed by white stone walls, it was begun under Ivan the Terrible in the mid-16th century.
Its oldest building is the five-aisled Annunciation Cathedral, but its newest may be the finest: the Kul Sharif mosque, dating from 2005, with its gleaming blue- green cupola and delicate minarets.
