St. paul winter carnival, minnesota, USA

St. Paul’s carnival was born in January 1886, in defiance of an allegation made by a New York reporter that the city in winter was “unfit for human habitation.” An intricate ice castle is built, and each year a king and queen are crowned and parade through the city.

There are skiing and bobsledding contests, toboggan slides, and snow sculptures.
