Wieliczka salt mine, Poland

Dating from the 13th century, this unusual UNESCO-listed site remained a working mine until 1996. Its 185 miles (300 km) of galleries are home to a depiction of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper, a statue of Pope John Paul II, and a “crystal” chandelier, all carved in rock salt. The Chapel of St. Kinga, patron saint of Poland, is one of several underground chapels.
