Every day for the past 130 years a steam engine has wound its way through the hill stations of northern India, under the gaze of Kanchanjenga, the world’s third-highest mountain. The UNESCO World Heritage-protected “toy train,” which once transported rice and tea, now takes passengers to Darjeeling.
