The 19th-century Erie Canal, a feat of engineering that established New York as America’s commercial capital, connected the city with the Northwest Territories in Canada, which were rich in minerals. Erie, and New York State’s three other canals – Oswego, Cayuga-Seneca, and Champlain – can be explored by boat, and all have museums dedicated to their history.
